Even the most diehard PES supporter would admit the series had something of a season to forget last year.
From its at times almost unplayable online mode, to its somewhat dated appearance and lacklustre feature set, PES 2008 had the hallmarks of a rushed release.
Konami had to raise its game, and thankfully this latest version goes some way to making up for last year’s sloppy display.
In terms of on the pitch performance, PES has got its groove back, having regained the playability that made it untouchable on the PS2.
There’s a more measured, realistic pace and flow to matches, and it’s a relief to find network play is far more stable affair.
Meanwhile a fantastic new manual option gives you full control over switching players, allowing you to craft some impressively realistic ‘give and go’s’.
Nevertheless, as any Arsenal fan will tell you, just being able to play good football isn’t enough to bring home the silverware.
PES 2009 online experience simply pales in comparison to FIFA’s more fleshed out offering, with EA’s game able to boast innovative new features like the 10 v 10 mode and the brilliant Adidas Live Season.
The new ‘Become a Legend’ career mode comes off as a poor mans equivalent to its rival’s ‘Be A Pro’ option, while the new UEFA Champions League tie-in only serves to highlight the game’s lack of official team licenses (West London Blue anyone?).
In short, PES 2009 is basically the game that last year’s should have been. Its full of much needed improvements, but you can’t help but feel that where once PES led the way it’s now playing catch up.
