Keane to sign Lita and Carson

Sunderland are reportedly set to make their plunge into the summer transfer market with a double swoop for Leroy Lita and Scott Carson.

Black Cats chief Roy Keane has yet to bolster his squad for their assault on the Premier League but has identified a new goalkeeper and a striker as top of his target list.

Reading hitman Lita has improved his stock considerably with his performances for England's Under-21s in Holland were he netted three times for Stuart Pearce's charges.

The Royals are desperate to hold on to the former Bristol City hitman, who would command a fee of around £5million, but Keane could face competition from Portsmouth.

Keane is also aware of his need to add a senior keeper to his squad with only Darren Ward and Marton Fulop on the books.

And Liverpool's Carson, 21, another member of England's Under-21 side, is seen as the ideal man to build a successful side around.

The former Leeds keeper knows he must play first-team football this season to keep himself in the England picture, but with Jose Reina the undisputed number one at Anfield he may have to move on.

Middlesbrough have become the first club to meet Manchester United's £6m valuation for Alan Smith and hope to persuade the England striker to fill the void left by Mark Viduka's departure to Newcastle United. Gareth Southgate, the Middlesbrough manager, now hopes the prospect of regular first-team football will convince Smith to leave the Premier League champions.
Smith has indicated he wants to stay at Old Trafford but the forward is aware that he will play only a peripheral role in Sir Alex Ferguson's plans next season. Smith and his adviser, Alex Black, were dismayed when they approached the club at the end of the season to ask for a contract extension, as had been previously mooted, and they were informed that one would not be forthcoming.
