NEWCASTLE are shock candidates to snatch Darren Bent to ease a potential striker crisis at the club.

Until now Tottenham have been favourites to sign the Charlton marksman, with the two clubs haggling over the fee. Liverpool are also in the running, but their prime target is believed to be Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres.

Tottenham upped their bid from £12million to £14m earlier this week for Bent but the Addicks say they will nothing less than £17m.
Newcastle's interest - backed by billionaire Mike Ashley - will strengthen Charlton's hand.

In recent days it had looked as though the relegated club were about to relent in their impasse with Spurs over their valuation of Bent.

Toon boss Sam Allardyce has lingering concerns over get-out clauses in the contracts of both Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins.

Allardyce fears losing one or even both forwards before the end of the transfer window.

Bent turned a £75,000-a-week, five-year deal to go to West Ham earlier this month - after Upton Park chiefs had agreed a £17m fee - insisting he is driven by ambition and not money. Newcastle can match that ambition with Big Sam's sights set firmly on ending the long wait for silverware at St James' Park.

Manchester City could also enter the running for Bent. City are desperate for a string of big-name signings - and a striker in particular - as the Eastlands club were the lowest scorers in the Premiership last season.

Parma Offer £7Mill For Rossi?

Parma have made a £7m offer for Giuseppe Rossi and Manchester United’s response will dictate their transfer strategy.

The Under-21 international proved decisive in keeping the Gialloblu in Serie A following his January loan move to the Tardini.

Although the player has stated he wants to “make it” at United, Parma President Tommaso Ghirardi hopes £7m can convince the club to release him.

It would be a return to Parma for Rossi, who was a part of their youth academy before he was poached by the Manchester side.

All of their transfer strategy now revolves around the response to this proposal. If Rossi does not remain, then they will focus on Chievo’s Nigerian forward Victor Obinna and Udinese’s Antonio Di Natale.

Domenico Morfeo also seems to be on his way out of the Tardini after receiving an offer from Greek outfit Olympiakos.

Having sold Vincenzo Grella to Torino, an exchange is on the cards with Simone Barone potentially going the other way.

It is also reported that Parma are showing an interest in Livorno midfielder Stefano Morrone, Udinese’s Under-21 international full-back Marco Motta and Fiorentina-owned goalkeeper Vlada Avramov, who spent this season on loan at Treviso.

MANCHESTER UNITED are ready to launch a renewed bid for Liverpool target Fernando Torres, knowing the Anfield club are struggling to raise the cash for the Atletico Madrid striker.

United's move to land £10millionrated Italian international Fabio Quagliarella looks doomed after Udinese outbid Sampdoria in a tender to secure the striker's services next season.

So Sir Alex Ferguson has turned his attentions back to long-term target Torres, who now looks likely to leave the club he has supported all his life after Atletico failed to qualify for Europe.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez's failed attempt to secure Torres with a bid which included Luis Garcia as a makeweight has alerted United to Atletico's willingness to do business.

But the Spanish club are looking to bank the £27m they inserted as a get-out clause when Torres signed a new contract last summer.

UNITED AGREE TO BORO £6M BID FOR SMITH

BORO have had a £6 million bid for striker Alan Smith accepted by Manchester United - and now manager Gareth Southgate will jet to Florida to convince the player to join his Riverside revolution.

Smith is currently on holiday in the States but Southgate is determined to sell Middlesbrough to the 25-year-old England international.

Southgate's Atlantic crossing puts Boro a step ahead of north east rivals Newcastle and Sunderland, both of whom have been tracking the former Leeds star.

Neither Sam Allardyce nor Roy Keane have lodged bids with Old Trafford, leaving Southgate in the box seat.

He is a huge fan of the combative Smith although he knows he will have to be at his persuasive best to lure him from Old Trafford to Teesside.

Smith has now accepted he no longer has a future at United and recently issued a thinly disguised "come and get me" plea.

Boro are also on the brink of launching a dramatic swoop for Barcelona forward Javier Saviola.

The 25-year-old spent last season on loan at Sevilla, scoring nine times, and will be allowed to leave by Barca boss Frank Rijkaard.

Talks are believed to be close to completion for the Argentina star to move to the Riverside.

And that won't be the end of the transfer activity for Boro, who have already signed Turkey forward Tuncay Sanli, because Jonathan Greening is set for a stunning switch back to the Riverside
