Darren Fletcher has called on Manchester United to ensure that their first Premiership title victory in four years is the start of a new period of dominance, not an isolated incident.
Sir Alex Ferguson claimed his ninth, and perhaps most satisfying, title when Chelsea failed to beat Arsenal last weekend, and United have been widely praised for the style in which they have reclaimed their place at the summit of English football.
However, two league triumphs in the past six seasons is still a somewhat disappointing statistic, so Fletcher is hoping the Premiership giants can usher in a new era of glory following their success this season.
"We looked at the pre-season predictions for this year and a lot of people had us down to finish fourth," said Fletcher.
"You don't take a lot of notice but you do look at these things, so it is nice to prove them wrong.
"With the FA Cup final coming up, I have not had chance to think about it too much but in any case, the attitude for this team must be to make it the start of something.
"We need to come back next season to defend our title and show it was not a one-off. We want to put a run of championships together."
Fletcher has enjoyed a prominent role in recent weeks, both in Europe and domestically, and the Scottish international is determined to fight for his place at Old Trafford despite talk of possible reinforcements in the summer.
"I would have liked to be in the team more often but I don't think I have let anyone down when I have been called upon and my consistency levels have been quite high," Fletcher added.
"You don't feel so bad being left out when the team is winning. It would be much more disappointing if we were losing and I still wasn't getting in.
"There is talk of a few more additions this summer, which is part of being at a big club like this.
"I know Manchester United is a special place and I hope to be around for a few more years yet."
