Cesc Fabregas wants Arsenal to beat Bolton on Saturday and secure qualification to the Champions League as soon as possible - so he can forget about the season just gone.
The 19-year-old Spaniard was talking after his side arrested a run of three defeats with a drab yet deserved point at Newcastle on Easter Monday. Bolton’s draw with Everton the same day means they stay two points behind Arsène Wenger’s fourth-placed side having played a game more.
Sam Allardyce brings his team to Emirates Stadium on Saturday in a game that will certainly shape the race for that last Champions League spot. With no silverware left to go for, Fabregas believes a victory would “calm” Arsenal’s position in the table so they could turn their attentions to the next campaign.
“We have to beat Bolton next Saturday,” he said. “We have to fight for fourth place to be in Europe next season and then we can forget about this season.
“It is big because they are two points behind us and we need the points if we want to be more calm in the table.
“Every point will be really important for us now. Obviously there are six games to go and we will need to win nearly everything if we are to secure our place in Europe for next season. That is the target from now until the end of the season. We can not fight for anything else so it is our job to make it.
“We have to try and go out to win six games. Then I am sure we will be alright.”
