Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he never saw Mark Hughes going into management.
Hughes confessed this week his desire to succeed Ferguson at Manchester United, but the Red Devils boss did not think the Welshman was management material as a player. Blackburn face United at Old Trafford on Saturday, with Hughes' Rovers battling for a Uefa Cup spot at the end of the campaign.
"As a player, Mark was such a quiet lad," Ferguson said in the Daily Star.
"You would never have thought he was going to be a coach."
Despite his admission, Ferguson has heaped praise on Hughes' work at Ewood Park, having arrived following a spell as Wales manager.
"There is no doubt, Mark has done well," the Scotsman added. "I think his spell in charge of Wales was a terrific advantage to him because, though it was part-time, it gave him an indication of what he was getting into." |
