当国际足联最终选择了这一首《飘扬之旗》作为2010年世界杯主题曲的时候，他们一定受到了深深的震撼。在这首歌中，旅居加拿大的索马里歌手克南怀着满腔的热爱，唱出了对于非洲这片热土的情感。实际上，克南能够创造出这首歌曲，跟他的身世有着很大的关系。
克南出生在索马里首都摩加迪沙的一个艺术世家，他经历了这个城市从兴到衰的过程。他的爷爷哈吉·穆罕默德是一个杰出的诗人，而姑姑马古尔则是索马里最有名的歌手，一家人原本生活得非常幸福。但是，由于国内时局的动荡，人们生活不下去了，他的父亲只能离开了故乡，来到纽约成为一名出租车司机，每个月将收入结余寄回去供养家人。而克南跟着妈妈，在动荡的索马里生活。9岁的时候，为了保护自己，他学会了开枪，但幸运的是，他至今还从来没有拿枪射击过任何一个人。因此，在他的歌词中有很多关于贫穷和战争的话题。
1991年，索马里内战爆发。虽然克南一家早就因为父亲的关系，申请了去美国的签证，但是却一直没有办下来。直到美国已经决定撤回在索马里的大使馆的前一天，克南和妈妈拿到了赴美的签证，而在整个索马里陷入瘫痪之前，他们乘上了最后一班商业客机到了纽约，后来又辗转到了加拿大。
实际上，当克南抵达美洲大陆的时候，他甚至还不会说英语，但是就已经开始学习音乐，开始进行创作。与一般的歌手不同，克南始终将眼光放在了生他养他的非洲大陆，对于他来说，没有比家乡更可爱的地方。于是，《做梦的人》、《吟游诗人》等一批歌曲应运而生。在这些歌曲中，充满了对于战争的反思以及非洲人民穷苦根源的思考。
2009年2月，克南创作了一首叫做《飘扬之旗》的歌曲。在歌词中，他这样写道：“看，殖民者是如何对待我们，让我们为了信仰而斗争，但最终换来的却是他们的欺骗。他们想要完全地控制我们，但他们无法这么做，因为我们就像是布法罗的斗士，一直在前进，在为了生存而斗争，这样我们终会获得自由。”这首歌迅速感染了大批痛恨战争的人们，让克南一举成名，甚至在美国也打下了自己的一片天下。
2009年9月，在国际足联开始征集世界杯主题曲的时候，克南将自己的歌曲邮寄给了国际足联。歌词中对于家乡的热爱，对于自由的追求，深深地感染了每一个人。最终，这首《飘扬之旗》被确认为南非世界杯的主题歌，而克南明年夏天也将在南非这块生生不息的土地上放声歌唱：“当我慢慢的长大，我会变得更强壮，他们会叫我‘自由’，像是一面飘扬之旗。”

歌词大意：当我长大我会变的强壮，与生俱来的自由就像挥舞的旗帜，追溯到强于罗马的帝皇时代！还有暴力倾向的贫民区和我成长的街道，那是我的家。我们会遨游出心里的阴暗，在那里学会了最难的生存方式：它可以暗淡、可以接受任何痛苦、也可以投降撤退！所以我们努力奋斗，战斗着，我们却不知道我们将获新生，因此我们耐心的等待那天并不遥远！但是那么多的战争，那么多的夙愿，使我们的承诺，违背了周围的亲人。在这之中听到冥冥之声：我们都赞同，爱就是这样，爱就是答案！当我们得到的确是欺骗，我们的控制力无法阻止，我们的事业向前迈进。人人都会唱、你我都将唱：当我长大的时候更坚强，就像挥舞的旗帜一样！
