I just saw the replay of the Iranian smackdown on China 70-52, and I see a lot of my Chinese friends blaming the coach (whatever his name is, I'm not a big follower of Asian Basketball), but I always say, isn't it funny when a team wins it's all about the players who won, but when a team loses it's all the coach's fault? As usual, the coach gets to be the fall guy. From what I saw, yeah, the coach does deserve blame, but let's be honest here, the players deserve more in this game. It's a championship game and players play that badly? Nothing a coach can do about that. What about these factors?
1) Chinese players were exhausted from playing a tough SF game aganst Lebanon the day before.
2) Iran is the defending champ, no matter what, playing against a defending champ is not going to be easy.
3) China had no Yao Ming (though it would not have helped since China had no outside game whatsoever)
4) Chinese team had no perimeter game
5) What can a coach do when ur so-called "best" NBA player Yi Jianlian shoots 5-17 and 1 of 4 from the FT???? (Is it safe to say he is not a basketball player?)
6) Sun Yue went scoreless in 23 minutes of action
7) Wang Shipeng went scoreless
8) Zhu Fangyu had 2pts
9) Liu Wei had 6pts on 33% shooting
10) Hu Xuefeng 2pts on 33% shooting
11) China got 12 points from its perimeter players, that's right, 12?!?!?!?! That's pathetic
12) China shot 2 of 18 from 3pt line. My dog could shoot better than that.
13) Iran outrebounded China 44-28. Ur not going to win games being outrebounded by 16.
14) Iran's NBA player Hamed Ehadadi actually showed up to play unlike Yi Jianlian. Ehadadi had 19pts 17reb on 9 of 17 shooting.
What's a coach to do when basically all your players except for Wang Zhizhi (who had an excellent game, and always seems to play well in int'l competition, don't know why he always gets ragged on, he usually plays better than any other Chinese player over the last several years I have seen, even better than Yao) play and shoot like shit? Believe me, there is no worse feeling for a coach when that happens cause no matter what u do, it is just one of those days where ur whole team is playing like crap, no matter what u do. Yes, blame does fall on the coaching staff for not being as well prepared for a championship game and perhaps the Chinese team doesn't have good training methods AND the coaches could have tried to spice things up a little to light a fire under the players' asses.
Iran played better and they showed up cause it was a championship game. For China, to play like that at home in a championship game, well, it is sad. Chinese team is not that good of a team, especially without Yao. Iran is much better and they look like an elite team when China has no Yao AND Yi plays like shit.
Again, in this type of game, more blame should go to the players than the coach. In a championship game, players need to rise above the occasion, coaches don't win or lose games, players do. Coaches don't play the game, they don't execute what needs to be done, they don't play defense, they don't rebound. Sometimes these kinds of games happen where nothing seems to go right and you can't do anything ta all to fix it, that's sports.
