McClaren: I won't resign
Steve McClaren insisted he would not step down as England manager after his squad's failure to qualify for UEFA EURO 2008, despite calls for his head starting within seconds of a 3-2 defeat by Croatia on Wednesday.
Asked if he would be offering his resignation, McClaren replied: "No, I won't. I understand the question but I'm not going to discuss my future so soon after a huge disappointment. It has been a massive let down for the nation and we have to reflect on it.
"Tonight it is case of analysing that rollercoaster game and taking in the huge disappointment that we won't be there next summer."
Despite his refusal to quit immediately, McClaren acknowledged that he had to accept responsibility for the fact that his star-studded squad had dropped 13 points in 12 games in their group.
"I said judge me over the 12 games and we deserve to be where we have finished," he said. "We don't deserve to have qualified. That is my job and I accept the responsibility."
McClaren however refused to acknowledge that he had gambled recklessly by handing Scott Carson his first competitive England start in a match of such huge importance.
The Aston Villa goalkeeper was guilty of an error that gifted Croatia their opening goal but McClaren said he still believed it had been the right decision to select him ahead of his former first-choice Paul Robinson.
Others are likely to take a harsher view and former Newcastle and England striker Alan Shearer predicted that McClaren would be forced out of his job.
Shearer, now a pundit for the BBC, said McClaren would inevitably be forced out as an inquest got underway over how a squad boasting some of the biggest names in world football had failed to get through a group that was regarded as straightforward when the qualifying draw was made two years ago.
"I don't think he'll resign, he'll have to be asked to leave," Shearer said. "The pressure will be unbelievable for him and it wouldn't surprise me if they end his term."
Ironically, McClaren would have been better placed to survive if England had not been reprieved by Israel's surprise defeat of Russia at the weekend, which meant they went into Wednesday's match needing only a point to qualify.
In those circumstances, McClaren is likely to be savaged by the media and Shearer said he would understand such a reaction.
"You can get away with one or two not playing to their potential, but I can think of only Peter Crouch who played anywhere near the standard expected. The brutal fact is we didn't deserve to go through on (Wednesday's) performance." |
