[转帖] PES2011 IGN preview & interview Seabass

IGN had the opportunity to sit down with 'Seabass' (Shingo Takatsuka), Head of PES Production at Konami in a one-to-one interview. Time was strictly limited, so we tried to focus on getting more information about what we'd just seen and played in the hands-on gaming session earlier. Bear in mind that we saw an early version of the game, so many elements or features were not yet finalized.

IGN AU: IGN: Please explain more about the online league in the game – will you be able to play 10 vs 10, or with two players at home on the same console VS others online, for example?

Shingo Takatsuka: The online play is basically the Master League, so it's 1 on 1. It will be possible to have multiple players playing online in a different game mode, but we'll address that later. You won't be able to play local multiplayer, no (that is, no split screen multiplayer for a couple of friends in one house).

IGN AU: How many licenses did you procure for the game?

Shingo Takatsuka: We now have the Copa Liberadores, the crucial South American club league, in the game but as far as the European licences go, nothing has changed from last year.

New animation systems are just one of the areas retooled in PES11.


IGN AU: How did you determine the 15 'Speed Stars'? Is a player's Speed Star status visible on screen, so obvious to gamers?

Shingo Takatsuka: It isn't just their skill set that we considered, but lots of other parameters. But no, it won't be visible on screen. You can probably figure it out by observing their play, though: the Speed Stars will make better, or quicker, changes in direction, will jink more and more effectively and will have all sorts of 'nifty' touches to their game – more nuanced and skillful play. But there won't be any obvious indicator on screen to show that they're a Speed Star – although we might look at this again in due course.

IGN AU: Is there a 'create-a-player' feature in the game and can you import your own face?

Shingo Takatsuka: You can customize icons and also faces, yes. In the 'Become a Legend' mode, you can customize your player as much as you want. We've also made it possible to import information from other, external devices (IGN – we're guessing he means USB drives and so forth) and put them in the game, or on the screen, such as your own screensavers and wallpapers.

IGN AU: We didn't notice any difficulty settings when playing the game. Are there any?

Shingo Takatsuka: Ah, that's because this is an early build, and it defaults to 'normal'. But there are actually six difficultly settings available in the final game, including a secret one.

IGN AU: Football is always most fun when playing against a friend but we've noticed that even skilled gamers here today are being beaten easily by the CPU. This often seems the case with the single-player mode in sports games. Why is this and do you think single players will have a hard time with the game?

Shingo Takatsuka: I'm not a top level player myself, so I usually change the difficultly setting to a lower, standard one, not the full-on, hardest professional difficulty level. But the best PES players will see the difficultly levels as a challenge and I think there's an element of masochism in there, where they'll try to challenge and beat the CPU in single-player to test their skills. Our priority was to make the game enjoyable for everyone and so there's a skill level for everyone.

Wireframes make everything look cool.


IGN AU: Why did you decide to allow gamers to adjust the speed of the game? Shouldn't you just aim to make the game speed the most realistic and authentic possible?

Shingo Takatsuka: I don't think it'll affect the character of the game – sure, you can change the speed, but we think it's more a matter of individual preference. Some players like the game to play slower, some faster, but the core nature of the game won't be affected by altering the speed.

IGN AU: What do you consider PES 2011's USP over FIFA?

Shingo Takatsuka: There are many! But I think the flexible but simple passing – the freedom of passing – is the central element that's superior to the FIFA series.

IGN AU: If PES 2011 could leave players with one, single, lasting impression, what would you like that to be?

Shingo Takatsuka: The freedom to play how you want!
