。呵呵
Interfering With Play – Tuesday 6th October 2009Posted by Dan Bolas in Interfering With Play on Tue 06 Oct 2009

Welcome to this week’s Interfering With Play. With so much already being said this week, there is very little that has been left ‘untouched’ on PESGaming.com. I fully agree and support Francis’ view that we should mention and discuss FIFA on this site. Not to do so would be deluded and naïve. The majority of people who visit this site are mature enough and well educated on football gaming, and therefore are perfectly capable of making up their own mind. For us to ignore the ‘other’ football game would be highly irresponsible. Personally, I am yet to play FIFA 10, but will be writing a full and honest review in the weeks to come, all being well. Secondly, I would like to address the view that many of you agree Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 provided value for money. Of course it does, but throughout all the regular criticism of Konami and the game’s development, people actually forget what is on offer. A quality game that provides hours of entertainment. Whether it is fake names, or a dodgy online mode, PES is always going to be slated for something, it is just nice to see that the fans of the game actually realise just what kind of value it offers on a week in, week out basis. Finally, before I begin, I would like to inform you all that I am still working on a new look PESGaming.com. As most people know, I don’t get paid for doing this, and therefore paid work has to come first, but hopefully a window will open in the next few weeks and I’ll be able to give the new design my undivided attention. That’s the plan anyway! With that all said, lets crack on with this week’s Interfering With Play.
“Break The Code”
Having heard the news that PES 2010 is not the same game as that experienced on the demo, the questions suddenly started flooding in. Like many of you, the first is why on earth did Konami release the demo in that state? Yes, in the past Konami have been criticised for taking slightly too long to release their demos (the PES 2008 one came out 6 weeks after the games release on the PSN), but to release a game that is quite a way of the end product seems slightly self destructive and pointless. I am aware that demos are designed to give an interpretation of the final product, but as before games like Batman and UFC provided small samples of what the full game would be like, not unfinished versions. It seems a very weird piece of marketing from a company that has suffered with bad PR in the past. However, with this said, I know many people actually enjoyed the demo, and providing the final game is an improvement upon that code, then everyone will be pretty happy come October 23rd.
My second question and the one that has really puzzled me is that it has taken two weeks after the demo’s release for anyone from Konami to get in touch and confirm that the game was not the final product. Everyone knows that EA Sports has a well oiled, almost mechanical PR machine that has you fully aware of its game’s strengths, release dates and downloadable content. Konami are still catching up on this but two weeks to respond to an issue such as this is a little bit too long in mine and many others opinions. They arguably would have been not saying anything at all! People would still pick up the game on release date, and those that wouldn’t would soon here about its perks from mates, co-workers et al. Even if you try to, it is nearly impossible to go a whole year without hearing the Pro Evolution Soccer vs. FIFA discussion in a changing room, bar or clubhouse. Therefore awareness of how different the game is from the demo would be raised in the first few weeks of release.
It is a huge step forward that Konami are including fan sites and actual fans of the game in their development stage. Of course it is going to take longer than expected to perfect, and that should not be held against them. From a personal view, I have fully enjoyed the PES 2010 demo, and haven’t gone back to 2009 since. That for me is a step that Konami are moving forward and something that makes me look forward to Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 more than ever. And I said I wouldn’t get wrapped into the hype!
“21 Seconds To Go”
Well, just a week to go for the IWP Player Of The Season Awards. Arguably the most tedious tally chart in the world, but all for a good cause, and something that I have taken great pride in over the past few years. Each September/October, I ask you, the PESGaming.com community for your three favourite players from that years Pro Evolution Soccer. This year is the turn of PES 2009, and whilst I am aware many of you have registered your votes, the polls officially close on Sunday 11th October 2009 at 11pm GMT. If you haven’t voted yet, and would like to, please comment with the names of your three favourite players from PES 2009 (giving reasons if you wish) or e-mail me the names to the IWP Address below. Obviously, it’s a bit of fun, but last year saw Lionel Messi take the title whereas it was Cristiano Ronaldo on PES 6. Please only include real players, as fakes will not be counted in the final poll.
“One More Time”
One thing Pro Evolution Soccer has been praised for in the past is its ‘one more game’ feeling. Its that ability to make you want to have just one more match, or just play another couple of games before you go to sleep, and before you know it, the sun is up, its 5am and you know you have to be at work/school/college in a couple of hours. It’s something that even the majority of FIFA fans would admit their game doesn’t have and it is probably responsible for many missed deadlines, broken relationships and martial arguments. Those of you who are in the world of football gaming would also know of one other title that offers that exact experience, and that is the Football Manager series.
I don’t really need to speak too much about the game, because most people are aware of what it entails, but for those of you from continents where the game is less popular, the format is pretty simple. You play the role solely of the manager of a football team. You cannot control what the players do on the field with a joy pad; instead it is down to your tactics against those of the computer AI. You live and die by your purchases, decisions and sales, and up until recently, this was all done by monitoring small dots on a screen or if your really old school, reading lines of text flashing up at 10 words per second!
Due to work and other reasons, I struggled to get into Football Manager 2009, and have only really put it in my laptop over the past weekend. The poor introduction of STEAM loading makes the game less portable than ever, but as soon as I finally got it loaded up and running, I have to say I am well and truly hooked. I dedicated the miserly four hours of sleep on Sunday night to Football Manager, as I managed to drag Standard Liege through to the knockout stages of the Champions League, and am currently in a huge battle to hold onto my talisman, young Belgian captain Steven Defour for the remainder of this campaign. It may be of selective taste, and it may not be for the casual football fan, but Football Manager is the true legend of the football management simulation, and I would like to take this opportunity to doth my cap to the franchise. Feel free to add your own sentiments in the comments section, or even criticisms if your one of those strange football loving folk who hates the game!
“Its All About Us”
My last point this week is something that I find almost comical, and yet at the same time feel it should be addressed in a quite serious manner. For many years, I strongly believed people who actually understood football, played football or were involved with football played Pro Evolution Soccer. All my footballing mates played solely PES and had very little time for the many other football franchises on the market. Of course, this could be tipped down to the way the game feels to play in relation to the real life sport, but it was more than likely because of the enjoyment experienced by playing the game!
Nowadays, it seems FIFA fans have taken up this mantra, and that ‘real’ football fans now apparently play FIFA. Yet, in my experience, the majority of my football playing mates still play Pro Evolution Soccer, having not enjoyed playing the FIFA demo. I think the answer is pretty simple and something which needs to be said. It is simply a matter of taste. I deliberately keep quiet my job and career on this site, but I do know a little bit about football and the footballing world. I also stand by the fact that PES is a stronger franchise than FIFA. I am more the willing to be proved wrong by any game that EA Sports or for that matter anyone else cares to release but by choosing PES, it does not mean I lack footballing knowledge or I am not a ‘real football fan’.
It would be interesting with honest and open hands for all people on this site to admit their age and put down their genuine footballing experience, because some of the people on this site, I have no doubt, have played the sport to a decent level. I am also well aware that some people probably don’t play at all and rely on football games as their tie to the sport they love, which is perfectly fine by me. It would just be interesting, from a research point of view to see which comments and usernames relate to which level of experience of the ‘real life game’. Of course, some people will make up their experience, but I believe the genuine ones will be obvious, and it may just help give some kind of insight into why people think and speak the way they do.
That’s all for this week. Hopefully there is something there which set your tongue wagging. interferingwithplay@hotmail.co.uk is the place to send your e-mails, and comments can be posted by clicking below. Remember to get involved with IWP Player Of The Season if you haven’t already, and a final bit of information regarding the IWP League and the IWP Play list will be discussed in next week’s column.
Thanks for Reading.
