Feyenoord will have to do without their main man at least until the end of the regular Eredivisie campaign, since it was today confirmed that Roy Makaay has torn ligaments in his left ankle.

The incident occurred when Germain Agustien stepped onto the international striker’s foot last night, during Feyenoord’s 1-0 league victory at Alkmaar.

Six-week lay-off

An examination today confirmed the initial diagnosis, which means Makaay will be out of action for at least six weeks, according to a statement on his club’s official website.

Feyenoord’s leading scorer of the season with 20 goals, the former Vitesse, Deportivo de La Coruña and Bayern star could return for the Eredivisie play-offs, unless Bert van Marwijk’s side manage to overcome both Ajax and PSV Eindhoven and win the title by the end of the regular season, on April 20.

Beker final in sight

In the meantime, the 55-year-old boss will have to do without Makaay’s services in the Beker as well, with Feyenoord taking on Breda in the semi-finals, next Tuesday. If all goes well for them, the 33-year-old striker could be set to play again in the final, on April 27. “It’s a shame. Apart from (37-year-old) Michael Mols we have few alternatives.” Van Marwijk said after the “DSB” game.

The ex-Twente, Utrecht and Glasgow Rangers hit-man has only found the back of the net twice in 20 outings this season, almost exclusively used as a substitute. However, he is expected to stand in for Makaay, since Andwélé Slory is not 100% fit and inexperienced Jacob Lensky is away on international duty with Canada’s U-23 side.

Pyrrhic victory

Makaay’s injury overshadowed Feyenoord’s achievement of making it 1,000 victories in the history of the Eredivisie in a total of 1,747 attempts. Ajax lead the way on 1,150 top-flight wins with PSV Eindhoven second on 1,043. As for Van Marwijk, he celebrated his hundredth victory as a Feyenoord coach in 164 Eredivisie matches. The late Austrian legend Ernst Happel recorded 98, while third place is occupied by the current Utrecht boss, Wim van Hanegem.
