北京时间6月12日19:30(南非当地时间13:30)，第19届世界杯B组第一轮一场比赛在伊丽莎白港市的曼德拉湾球场展开角逐，韩国2比0取胜希腊，李正秀第7分钟先拔头筹，朴智星扩大比分。尽管这是两队首次在世界杯相遇，但韩国在此前两度同希腊的热身赛中1胜1平稍占优势。韩国也是亚洲区预选赛中唯一保持不败的出线球队(7胜1平)。韩国最近两场热身先后输给白俄罗斯和西班牙，但此前曾连胜科特迪瓦、厄瓜多尔和日本等劲敌。希腊仅仅通过附加赛晋级，在1994年的美国世界杯上，希腊小组赛三战皆墨，0分0进球，净丢10球出局。
希腊第3分钟险些破门，赵容亨将萨拉马斯的左路传中球顶出底线解围。卡拉贡尼斯开出角球，托罗西迪斯小禁区前的近距离射门偏出。随后车杜里的远射被封堵。韩国第7分钟取得领先，李荣杓赢得左侧角旗附近的任意球，寄诚庸传中禁区内，查理斯特亚斯冒顶，无人防守的李正秀远点近距离垫射空门入网。第14分钟，朴周永禁区左侧头球摆渡，李青龙险些在小禁区前拿到机会。
第15分钟，车杜里掷出界外球，李青龙突入小禁区右上角被托罗西迪斯从背后撞倒，新西兰裁判米切尔-赫斯特未予判罚。随后希腊连获两次角球，但并未制造威胁。韩国却从容利用快速反击制造机会，第23分钟，金正友右路传中，朴周永12码处射偏。韩国第28分钟险些扩大比分，曼联边锋朴智星直传，朴周永12码处的单刀射门被佐瓦斯出击挡出横梁。
希腊人进攻手段单一，他们的传中球均被韩国人一一化解。而韩国也频繁利用战术犯规遏制希腊人的进攻速度。第41分钟，李青龙传球，朴周永25码处左脚劲射高出。第44分钟，文特拉传中，耶卡斯错过头球机会，郑成龙面对阳光险些扑救脱手。最终韩国在半场1-0领先希腊。

第86分钟，李荣杓传球，廉基勋禁区左侧的射门被封堵，李青龙禁区右侧边缘内的射门被佐瓦斯扑出右下角。随后角球开出，金正友禁区左侧12码处的劲射偏出近角。最后时刻，李升烈和金在城先后替补出场。韩国队首场2比0取胜。这是韩国队自本土外首次在世界杯决赛圈取胜欧洲球队，而希腊队继续在世界杯保持0分0进球的尴尬。
