Coca-Cola has offered ₤1.6bn in cash to buy 70% of the share of Arsenal Football Club, in what would be the biggest takeover by a foreign company in English Premier League. It seems that Muhtar Kent, Coke's chief executive, has great interest in sport field.
Muhtar Kent said, the purchase “provides a unique opportunity to strengthen our business in Europe, and don’t forget that Coca-Cola is a main sponsor of sports games, so it’s not strange that we purchase a famous football club.” He also admitted he is a fan of Gunners; the player he likes best is Kolo Toure.
But the purchase is not only driven by affections, after the fact of several financial groups bought league teams, Coca-Cola thought the prospect of owning a top football club overseas. “Arsenal is the only one of the top four teams hasn’t been bought”, Kent said: “and it is cheaper for the existence of many promised young players, they’ll be a gold mine in three years, but we must keep them first. And Wenger, the manager. To the young boys, he is the flag.”
The Arsenal board is considering the purchase seriously, Hill Wood, the director said: “That means we’ll sell most of our stocks and the control, but we can’t reject it. The price is good, it's three times' the market price and reflects a ratio of 50. We could not damage the benefits of partners because Arsenal is a listed company, though some people will be disappointed.”
Manager Wenger refuses to comment on the purchase, he just said: “I will discuss it with my old friend Dunn. Anyway, Coca-Cola may pay off the debt of stadium for us.”
That’s not whole fact; Kent has promised that he will put 100M pounds next year in transfer market except paying the debt. That’s really good news for Wenger and Arsenal fans but not for Man Red and London Blue.
Coke was advised by Goldman Sachs and Arsenal by RBS.
